Scheduling, design and specification, copyediting and proofreading, progress chasing, liaison with typesetters/printers and authors/editors/commissioning editors/publicity department for some 8--10 research-level books per year. Frequent contact with authors and editors.
Latterly visiting and evaluating typesetters and printers.
1982--84 BRITISH DENTAL JOURNAL -- "Deputy Editor"
Essentially a managing [production] editor post with some original writing and reporting. Deputizing for the Editor as appropriate and supervising three staff in the organization and production of a twice-monthly full colour magazine [56--64 pp typically] containing a central "research journal" section. Also responsible for numerous "inserts" comprising Annual Report & Accounts and Representative Body reports of the British Dental Association as well as reports from other dental authorities. Responsible for reprint booklets and latterly an
original publishing programme. Organized a publishing mini-seminar for dental student editors. Wrote abstracts from Nature as fillers and undertook about one-half of the copyediting and two-thirds of the proofreading. Initiated partial redesign as necessary. Wrote and produced
the journal style book. Attended Editorial board meetings. Editor throughout this period was Dame (then Mrs) Margaret Seward.
1984--86 TEXTILE INSTITUTE -- "Managing Editor"
Responsible for complete production and despatch of 48--64pp monthly colour magazine Textile Horizons in cooperation with Editor and [one-man] advertising department. Copyediting, proofreading, page makeup, passing for press, print buying and contractual arrangements, overseeing postal distribution and compiling ABC figures. [Latterly with an assistant.] Also produced Annual Report & Accounts of the Institute and some books [including camera-ready paste-up]. Originated and produced TI News and Bookshop News. Some original writing and
reporting.
1987-- FREELANCE EDITORIAL SERVICES Part-time freelance production editor duties at Textile Institute during 1987 in addition to other freelance working. Thereafter entirely independent.
